Gentamicin sulfate
Indications/Uses
Bacterial infections caused by susceptible pathogens especially gm -ve bacilli.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult Serious infection 3 mg/kg/day in 3 equal doses 8 hrly. Life-threatening infection Up to 5 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses. Childn 2-2.5 mg/kg 8 hrly. Neonate & infant >1 wk 2.5 mg/kg 8 hrly, Premature or full-term neonate ≤1 wk 2.5 mg/kg 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides.
Special Precautions
Neuromuscular disease. Renal impairment. Pregnancy. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, anemia, purpura, fever.
Drug Interactions
Increases nephrotoxicity w/ cephalosporins.
